President Calls Practice ‘One of the Great Scams of Our Time’ Ahead of Wednesday’s Oral Arguments
President Donald Trump has sharply criticised birthright citizenship, describing it as “one of the great scams of our time” in a Truth Social post on Tuesday.
The comments come as the Supreme Court is set to hear oral arguments on Wednesday in a case that could significantly affect the long-standing precedent granting automatic U.S. citizenship to most children born on American soil.

“Birthright Citizenship has to do with the babies of slaves, not Chinese Billionaires who have 56 kids, all of whom ‘become’ American Citizens,” Trump wrote in part. “One of the many Great Scams of our time!”
Trump issued an executive order last year declaring that children born in the United States to parents who are present illegally are not eligible for birthright citizenship. The order was immediately challenged in federal court, leading to the current Supreme Court case.
The principle of birthright citizenship, rooted in the 14th Amendment and upheld for more than 125 years, has been described by legal experts as difficult to overturn. The upcoming arguments are expected to focus on the scope and interpretation of that constitutional provision.
The case has drawn significant attention as it touches on immigration policy, citizenship rights, and the limits of executive power. A ruling could have far-reaching implications for families and future generations.
Trump’s latest remarks reflect his long-standing opposition to birthright citizenship, which he has repeatedly argued is being exploited and should be restricted.
