Donedeal: Leicester City signs Atalanta promising defender on £45million

Caleb Okoli, a promising defender, has officially joined Leicester City from Serie A team Atalanta.

A five-year contract with the Foxes has been committed by Okoli, 22, as they prepare for the 2024–2025 Premier League season. He carries with him experience from both the young international and elite levels in Italy.

The center defender, who was born in Vicenza, joined Atalanta in 2015 and advanced quickly through their development program. With the Under-19s, he took home the National Youth Super Cup title in 2019.

During his loan stint at SPAL in Serie B in the 2020–21 season, Okoli made 16 appearances and scored one goal as part of his professional career.

During a loan to Cremonese in the 2021–2022 season, he made 27 appearances, furthering his progress.

In August 2022, Okoli made his Serie A debut for Atalanta in a victory over Sampdoria. He made 17 appearances in the 2022–2023 campaign, helping the team finish in fifth place and qualify for the Europa League.

Okoli signed a loan with Frosinone in September 2023, and he participated in 37 games in all competitions.

Okoli has competed for Italy at the U19, U20, and U21 levels internationally. He participated in the 2023 EURO U21 Championships to show off his skills in front of a larger audience.

Okoli highlighted his delight after making his move, saying, “I think this is the right time for me to make a step forward, and a very big one.” I’m thrilled with my decision, and I can’t wait to get started in the Premier League. I feel eager to get started with my new team now that I’m in Leicester.

“The Premier League is the best league in the world,” he continued. I seized the chance to visit Leicester and showcase my talents in the Premier League, as it is an exquisite and significant team.
