2023 Fantasy Basketball Busts: Lauri Markkanen Is Being Overvalued | Fantasy Alarm

The Utah Jazz standout was passed over by the Sacramento Kings, who then turned to DeMar DeRozan.

The Sacramento Kings signed and traded for six-time All-Star DeMar DeRozan on Saturday, but they had other plans in mind before getting the talented forward from the Chicago Bulls.

Before acquiring DeRozan, the Kings “went hard” for Utah Jazz player Lauri Markkanen, according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic:

“The Kings went hard after the Utah Jazz’s Lauri Markkanen earlier in the week, protecting Keegan Murray in the discussions but putting on the table what they believe was a substantial enough picks-based offer, team sources said.” Slater stated, “But they put a deadline to their side of the deal, needing an answer quickly considering the urgency of the dissolving market.”

Sacramento’s decision to bring on another star quickly was a lifesaver since holding out for Markkanen to become available would have meant Sacramento’s downfall. There have been reports that Markkanen is available for a trade, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise if Utah chooses to retain him and offer him a long-term agreement.

According to Slater, the Kings were determined to keep emerging talent Keegan Murray out of trade negotiations because they saw a bright future ahead for the 23-year-old.

Fans will have to wait and watch if a new core that includes De’Aaron Fox, Malik Monk, Keegan Murray, DeMar DeRozan, and Domantas Sabonis turns into the postseason success Sacramento has been waiting for for the past 20 years, despite being one of the most talented teams in the league on paper.

DeRozan is a stronger backup option now that the chance of trading for Markkanen has been eliminated. Trading for Markkanen would have changed the franchise drastically. Without a doubt, the Kings are in a better position now than they were two weeks ago.
