Breaking: Lakers Engage in $197 million blockbuster deals to land Five-Team, All-Star

The Los Angeles Lakers may decide to look to the trade market as they run out of choices in NBA free agency. A crazy five-team trade proposal including the Lakers, New Orleans Pelicans, Cleveland Cavaliers, Sacramento Kings, and Utah Jazz was made by CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn.

“Excellent news at three in the morning.” Quinn wrote on Twitter on July 3, 2024, “I fixed five teams.” The part from Brandon Ingram to Sacramento is not shown in the picture. Lakers win a star! A star is bestowed upon kings! Jazz has its selections! Pels reach their peak! In one fell stroke, the Cavs solve their roster balance problems with the ideal Mobley partner.

The Lakers will acquire standout guard Darius Garland of the Cavaliers as part of the massive NBA trade deal. D’Angelo Russell, Gabe Vincent, Jalen Hood-Schifino, and two future first round picks (2029, 2031) are being traded by Los Angeles.

Harrison Barnes, Lauri Markkanen, and Russell are acquired by Cleveland. As part of the massive trade, the Cavaliers trade Jarrett Allen to the Pelicans.

Markkanen is traded to Utah for Vincent, Hood-Schifino, and four additional first-round picks. The Jazz take two players in the first round from the Lakers (2029, 2031) and two players from the Kings (2028, 2030).

In exchange for Barnes, Kevin Huerter, and the two first round picks, Sacramento get Brandon Ingram. Ingram is sent to Sacramento, and Allen and Huerter are added by New Orleans.

Let’s examine the Lakers’ possible outcomes from this possible transaction.

Cavaliers guard Darius Garland is represented by Klutch Sports, just like Lakers stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

It helps with logistics because Rich Paul, an agent for Klutch Sports, represents Garland. The super agent in question also represents LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Bronny James, among other Los Angeles athletes.

In addition to acquiring Garland’s substantial five-year, $197 million contract, the Lakers would also be relocating two future first round picks. Garland’s contract has four seasons left on it, and in 2024–2025, he will be subject to a $36.7 million cap hit. Only if the Lakers head staff thinks Garland is the final component needed to turn the team into a contender does the blockbuster trade make sense.

After Donovan Mitchell was re-signed by Cleveland, the Cavaliers may decide to part ways with Garland. In 57 games played last season, the veteran averaged 18 points, 6.5 assists, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per contest while shooting 37.1% from outside the arc.

“Sure to be hot topics at the NBA’s upcoming summer league in Las Vegas: can Atkinson improve the Allen/Evan Mobley frontcourt’s performance, and will Darius Garland’s Klutch Sports representatives push for Garland to be traded now that Donovan Mitchell has committed to be in Cleveland for at least the next two seasons, as multiple teams out there eyeing Garland have hoped?” In a story published on Substack on July 5, titled “The latest on Lauri Markkanen and more NBA free agency and trade talk,” NBA insider Marc Stein provided specifics.
