Chiefs Have Made A Roster Decision With Clyde Edwards-Helaire

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a significant roster decision regarding running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, a move that could have lasting implications for both the player and the team. Selected 32nd overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, Edwards-Helaire was expected to be a dynamic weapon for the Chiefs’ high-powered offense. However, his time in Kansas City has been marred by injuries and inconsistent play, leading to questions about his future with the team.

### The Background

Coming out of LSU, Edwards-Helaire was highly touted for his ability to catch passes out of the backfield and make defenders miss in space. His college career culminated in a national championship, and many believed he would be the perfect fit in Andy Reid’s offense, especially with quarterback Patrick Mahomes leading the charge. The Chiefs had just won the Super Bowl, and the addition of Edwards-Helaire was seen as a move that would keep their offense at the top of the league.

In his rookie season, Edwards-Helaire showed flashes of his potential, rushing for 803 yards and four touchdowns in 13 games. He also added 36 receptions for 297 yards and a touchdown. However, injuries began to take their toll, and he missed three games during his rookie campaign. The following season was even more frustrating, as he managed only 517 rushing yards and four touchdowns in 10 games, missing time due to knee and shoulder injuries.

### The Decision

As the 2024 season approached, the Chiefs had a decision to make regarding Edwards-Helaire. With the emergence of other running backs like Isiah Pacheco and the presence of veteran Jerick McKinnon, the Chiefs’ backfield was becoming crowded. Pacheco, in particular, had impressed during the 2023 season, rushing for over 800 yards and becoming a reliable option in the red zone.

Given Edwards-Helaire’s injury history and inconsistent production, there were rumors throughout the offseason that the Chiefs might explore trade options or even release him outright. However, the team decided to keep him on the roster, albeit in a reduced role. This decision suggests that while the Chiefs still see value in Edwards-Helaire, they are not relying on him to be their primary ball carrier.

### The Impact

Keeping Edwards-Helaire on the roster provides the Chiefs with depth at the running back position, but it also creates a potential dilemma in terms of playing time. With Pacheco likely to start and McKinnon serving as the primary backup, Edwards-Helaire’s role is uncertain. He could be used in specific situations, such as passing downs, where his receiving skills can be utilized. However, his reduced role could also limit his opportunities to prove himself, which might affect his confidence and performance.

For Edwards-Helaire, this season is critical. He is entering the final year of his rookie contract, and his future in the NFL could depend on how he performs. If he can stay healthy and make the most of his opportunities, he could earn a new contract, either with the Chiefs or another team. However, another injury-plagued season could lead to him being labeled as a bust, which would significantly impact his career prospects.

### The Bigger Picture

For the Chiefs, the decision to retain Edwards-Helaire in a reduced role reflects their broader strategy of maintaining depth and flexibility on offense. While Mahomes and the passing game will always be the focal points, having multiple options in the backfield allows the team to adapt to different situations and opponents. If Edwards-Helaire can find a way to contribute, it will only make the Chiefs’ offense more dangerous.

In the grand scheme, the decision to keep Edwards-Helaire is a low-risk move for the Chiefs. If he thrives in his role, the team will benefit from having another playmaker on the field. If he struggles, the Chiefs have enough depth to cover his absence. For Edwards-Helaire, however, this season could be the make-or-break moment of his NFL career.
